Scoil Chaitriona Junior News Letter

The December issue of our newsletter was given out yesterday. 1) New School: no news from the Department on the finance for our new school. We will inform you as soon as we get news. 2) Reminder: Parents please be advised if your child misses 20 days or more his/her name must be forwarded to the National Welfare Board. While we appreciate that children who are ill should remain at home, please make sure that your child attends school regularly. 3) We wish you all a happy Christmas and a Happy New Year. We look forward seeing you all on Monday 7th of January 2008.

We saw a play in the halla called 'Sinbad the Sailor. Some of our class were allowed to take part in the show-it was great fun!

Carol Service - Wednesday, 19th December at 7p.m

All children in the school will be included in the carol service, and as it is a prayer service we would like to keep it as reverent as possible in order to convey a sense of the real meaning of Christmas.

We appreciate that you may wish to take photographs etc., but please be sensitive to the fact that the children and the teachers need space and ease of access during the performance, so please remain back from the altar area and front seats once the service is underway.

This will ensure that all parents can listen in comfort and that the children can perform without interruption. Mobile phones will need to be switched off before entering the church.

Junior Infants may dress as characters from the nativity Story, but in the interest of safety we ask that all shepherds leave their crooks outside!

Book Fair

Book Fair 2007: Miss Costello's class will be going on Monday at 1:30 to 2pm. -Each child needs a notebook and pencil to record the titles and prices of the books they are interested in. - Monday is the only viewing day for our class. -Parents are asked when purchasing books to give book title and money to their child's teacher. The books will then be delivered to the child. -The more books that are bought the more free books our class gets!!!!

Science Week

It is Science Week this week. We completed some experiments: 1. We learned that warm air is lighter than cold air and there fore warm air rises and cold air comes in to take its place. This causes air currents. We made Snake Spirals and placed them above the radiators in our class. The air above the radiator is warm and rises and makes the snake spin. 2. We completed some experiments to learn more about ‘Myself’ – we took our fingerprints, checked which eye is our dominant eye and we found out about the blind spot. We know everybody’s fingerprints are different. We know everyone has a dominant eye and the brain can get confused as to where an object is or it may see double.

Armagh Planetarium

The Armagh Planetarium came to our school today (20th of Nov) The Stardome is a portable planetarium that was set up in our halla all day today.

The Stardome gave all children in the school an exciting way to learn about where we live in Universe and the possibilities of space travel.

We were allowed to come out of the classroom and learn about science in a fun and interactive way.

Home School Community Liaison

As many of you will know our computer class for beginners is up and running, with Ms Tracy reacher very kindly volunteering her time eight hours a week. On Tuesday's, the Ballybane Library offers the use of a play area, so that parents, who would otherwise not be able to attend teh class, may bring along their young childre. The class runs for two hours every Tuesday morning (10am -12pm). In order to facilitte this class, I would be very grateful to any parents who are available during these hours who could volunteer their time to supervise the play area. If you have this time to spare and are willing to volunteer please contact Caitriona Coughlan at 083 3141498. It will be very much appreciated.

The mobile farm came to visit..

On the 7th of November the mobile farm came to visit Scoil Chaitriona Jnr. All classes went to visit it in the junior yard. We saw lots of different animals.

We were allowed to pet the different animals. Chloe, the goose, sat on SC's head and we learned why it is important to brush our teeth regularly - look at the photo of Rosie's teeth - YUCK!

Music in the classroom

Emer came to visit 1st and 2nd class. While she was here she let us play her guitar and she taught us how to sing "The Rose." It is a lovely song. We had a great time with our visitor!

Self Portraits.

In this art lesson the children made a self-portrait to communicate ideas about themselves.

They talked about images of people in drawings, paintings and photographs and artists’ self-portraits.

They investigated a range of drawing materials and techniques and learned how to mix and use colour in a painting.

The Prince and the Dark Forest - CC: Once upon a time there lived a prince called Curtis he had black hair. He lives in a very big palace he loves to eat pizza. One day he was riding his horse and he came to a Darck Forest and and he went into it and out came a big black Dragon in armer. Then the dragon rored. Behind the dragon there was a big cyclops. The prince didn't know what to do. he ran up to it. when he got to the other side he looked down. . It it was very steep he terned around and the dragon fell down the monten. but the cyclops dident. When the dragon fell down a sword fell out of his pocket and the princes tock the sword and started to fight the cyclops he stabed the cyclops. The cyclops fell down the monten and they lived happpily ever after. The End

The Princess and the Prince : JL

Once upon a time there live girl called Rebecca .She has short hair.She live in a palan. her mums name is EvE. She was a nice mum But it was not nice being a princess. There lived a witch. She was very mean. She didn't like her. She had long hair. She had black hair and blue eyes. She was ugly and had a black spot. One day a note was in the post box. It was for the princess. It was not nice. It said "meet the princess at her house." The witch tried to kill the princess but the prince jumped out and killed the witch. The End.

The princess - SU

Once upon a time there was a princess Who lived in a Palace her name was Andra. Her hiar was brown. She loves eating custard and chips. She was nice and cind. and she was pretty. hermum was evil. She will never let her out of the palace. The princess was board. She wanted a prince. She wished she had a prince to ride a horse to eat and slay the dragon and fix the cart. Her wish came true and everything she said came true and They lived Happily ever after. Then the mum was nver seen again. The end of my story.

The Princess - TLC

Once upon a time there was a King how was greedy. he was very nasty. I didn't like him. He got invaded bay the connacht army. The connacht King. He had the finest weapons and the finest castle and the finest army. The red branch knights. I was hoping for connacht to win and they won the invasion. The connucht King was very nice. he tried to be very nasty in the army. he was is rough as a hound he did not die in the invasion he died when he got old. The End.

The Dragons - RGN:

Once upon a time there lived a princess named Sharon. She had blonde hair and blue eyes. She longed to be mared. One day she was walking threw her gardan but when she was walking she saw a note on the wall. it seid "you are being invaded by dragones." :Oh no" she said "I wonder when. I must get an army." She got the strongest men in the hole of Irland. She got the strongest metell and wepens. She bote all the hores that she cote by. One day she seid "we will atack in the morning" But then the evel dragons ataked and the war began. Then a princ came the princess is team wone. the war was over and the contress were friends. Soon the princess and the prince were mared and they lived happly ever after the two contrys promest never to fite again. The End.

The King and Prince: - AC. Once upon a time there lived a King and prince. There names were phillip and Lisa. They had blond and black hair. They had long and shrt hair. Then they heard a foot step then they looked in every place. They did not now wat it was so the dragon came down the steps and they ran out of the house. The dragon brock down the place and they ran and rand and they lived hapily ever avter. The End The red Branch Knight and the connought: DC Once upon a time the Connought was mad. He must get the Best Bull in The World. The red Branch Knights were gong to kill The Bull and The King. he summend a army to kill them. The red Branch Knights won. they forgot Finn was the best Knight in the land. The was the strongest in the world. He got shot but he sirved. he still is fighting. He was in alot of fights. He won the fight. no one could won him. Finn was just to good for them. The End .

Our Leaving Party - Kids Cooking in Room 13

Miss Costello's Second Class have finally moved - Exciting times for us!!! We are now located in the new prefabs to the front of the school, room 23. We have fond memories of Room 13 so we thought it would be nice to throw a leaving party. We decided, since we were looking at recipes in class, that we would bake a chocolate cake for the the class. We chose a chocolate domino cake from a recipe book called "Kids Can Cook!" For many people, "kids and cooking" conjures up images of children wielding sharp knives and a sticky mess from floor to ceiling, but thankfully that was not what happened in Second Class on Monday... Rikki and the war - SMC

Once upon a time there was a princess called Rikki she had fair brown hair and sea blue eyes. Now Rikki was not an ordinary princess,Rikki liked riding, sword fighting and wars. One day on her way to sword fighting lessons she came across a cloak, boots and a hat. Rikki had her sword with her. She had an idea. Rikki pretended to be a riding prince.The stuf belonged to prince leuise who was resting by the river. The next day Rikki found out that her evil cousin was coming down in an hour. then in an hours time her cousin rang the doorbell when Rikki opend the door she saw her cousin Fiona and a houge army Fiona just said we're taking over they all ran in and broke everything. Then sudently a enormuse dragon appeard. Rikki ran upstairs under her bed when she came outside Rikki had her sword she cut the dragon open , killed all the army and it was just Rikki and fiona and befor anyone touched anyone thay made up and sudently thay lifted off the ground and had powers to do anything at all. So Fiona POOFED!! home and Rikki cleaned with her powers.Just then prince Louise came looking for his things two months later thay got marryed and had children and thay all lived happily ever after. The end

Art and Craft: Making a palace for Curtis.

Today in art and craft we each made a palace for Curtis. Curtis is a prince from a story "Custard, Custard" in our class reader. Yesterday we planned how to make our castle and we decided what materials we would use. Today we tried hard to stick to our original designs. Here are some of our photos...
